Ziggurat
The Sumerians were the first human civilization in history.
Each city-state also had its own god. The people who performed ceremonies for the gods were called "priests." Priests said prayers to their gods at the top of huge buildings called "ziggurats."
Sumerians were excellent traders.
The Sumerians developed the first systems for writing, laws, and measurement. The Sumerians' writing was called "cuneiform."
Cuneiform was written on wet clay tablets with reed styluses. When the writing was done, the Sumerians baked the tablets to save the writing.
The Sumerians also developed the first wheels for vehicles, bricks, and a special way of watering crops called "irrigation."
